Good news, poets!
The first week of NaPoWriMo is done; if you've made it this far, then you're already 1/4 of the way there.
This year was the first I've ever set such an exhausting goal for myself - I've always been the one hiding behind the excuse that "you can't force inspiration" when it comes to writing, so even the idea of writing a brand-new poem, every freakin' day, for THIRTY FREAKIN' DAYS!!!! was pretty damned intimidating. I didn't know what was gonna happen, but I figured I was certainly in for a surprise...
Oh, how surprised I've been!
Things have taken surprising turns.
What I meant to be just a silly poem about getting tattooed veered off into left field for a while, and came out as a sort of reflection on just how fucked up it is, the things we silly humans will do to try to make ourselves perfect beings. What started out as an intriguing phrase I heard on a TV show turned into the first thing I've written about my grandmother's death OR my own suicide attempt in several years.
Every time midnight rolls around, I get a panicked feeling in my silly wrists,
and every day, by the time all is said and done, something enters my mind
that I didn't see coming,
hits me like a runaway train,
and leaves me scratchin' my head trying to figure out
"Where the hell did that one come from?"
the Astronaut Writer has been joining me on this one. If you haven't checked out some of the stuff she's been throwin' down, make sure you do so. This summer is gonna be crazy. Got a full week of touring ahead of me, and I'm ready...
Tomorrow, I'm taking off for the weekend with my good friend Justin Toxicated to do a quick two-night blitz of open mics. It's an excuse for a road trip. We're gonna watch water fall over rocks at an incredible speed. We're gonna get turned away at the Canadian border on account of none of us havin' passports. We're gonna be poets, punk rockers, and adventurous youth - which will no doubt be met by hearty disapproval from at least one of each of our parents.
If you're anywhere near the Rochester/Buffalo area, please come visit us! Dates are posted on the shows page.
See ya on the road,
someday
